The huge 200% increase in BEV registrations experienced between 2019-20 has yet to be repeated. The SMMT’s updated registration figures follow several announcements by the UK government, which have given clarity to the automotive industry, the biggest being the delay on the ban on sales of new petrol and diesel vehicles until 2035.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the government is committed to reaching net zero by 2050 – but in a “more proportionate way”. A 2035 deadline is in line with EU plans, but will mean that the UK will no longer take the lead in the Road to Zero.
